Day 38: Jesus Prays
Read John 17:6-19
"All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them." John 17:10
As the cross draws ever nearer, Jesus pivots His prayers to His disciples, recounting His mission and ministry and asking the Father to protect them after He is gone.
But look closely at his prayer, and see how often you hear Jesus say “gave” or “give” or “given.” These aren’t just random words that appear here, scores of other times in John’s gospel and more than 1,000 times in the Bible: They remind us that our God is an amazingly loving, lavish and extravagant giver.
We see that in Jesus’ prayer, and if we look at our own lives, we should see it there as well.
When Jesus prays, “All I have is yours, and all you have is mine,” He’s talking about the disciples God had given Him. But it’s true of our lives as well: All we have is a gift from Him, and all He is and has is ours.
Think about a sampling of what God has given us: He’s given us physical life itself, eternal life in and through His Son, and His Holy Spirit living in us. He’s given us His infallible Word, direct access to Him through prayer, and wisdom, guidance, forgiveness and a righteousness we cannot earn. He’s given us the promises of His presence and protection and provision, and He blesses us with joy, love, peace and hope no matter what’s going on.
