Centenary Christmas Devotional - 2009
Read Luke 1:57-66

Mary and Zechariah were in a place that required them to choose to follow God’s instructions verses the “traditions” or influences of their environment. Naming a child after his or her father in itself is not wrong, but they knew that God had specific instructions for them. You may say, “Well, in their situation, Zechariah was given an angel to specify what he had to do. If I had an angel giving me clear instructions in my situation, then I would know what to do as well!”
We have a whole Bible that gives us many clear instructions. Have you ever heard the Acronym that spells out Bible: Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. The Bible gives us plenty of instructions on how to live a life that honors God. Have you ever read through the book of Proverbs? In it, is instruction after instruction on how to use wisdom to do what is right. We are faced daily with the choice to do right despite our family, friends or even teachers whose good intentions may not be in line with God’s word.

- What did Elizabeth’s neighbors and relatives share with her? (vs. 58)
- What happened to Zechariah after he agreed to name their son John?
- Can you identify a situation in your life were “well-meaning” individuals may be leading you away from God?
Suggested Prayer: Pray for teenagers that are faced with peer pressure.
A Special Christmas Memory from Kari S.
When I was a very little girl, I remember my little sister Jennifer and I were going to the grocery store with our Grandmommie and Dadoo. They bought us hot chocolate and bear claws before we shopped. After we went to the store, we were allowed to help Grandmommie by licking and pasting little green stamps with an “S” on them into a booklet. (She earned the stamps from purchases at the grocery store.) She saved the stamps all year long, and that year, she redeemed several books of the stamps for a Christmas dolly for me. Grandmommie died when I was still very young, so I cherish the memory of that time we spent together; eating bear claws, drinking hot chocolate, and pasting the little stamps in the books. I am thankful that we had that unhurried time together.
