Day 43: It is Finished
“When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. John 19:30 (NIV)
Read John 19. I know, I know, you’ve read it before. You’ve heard it preached dozens of times, but humor me and read it again. The whole reason for us even having a devotional is found in these words. The crucifixion (and subsequent resurrection) is what it’s all about. Before we fell dead in the garden, God knew how He would reconcile us to Him through the blood of Jesus.
Do me a favor. (I know, first reading and now another favor? Geeze, who does this guy think he is?)
I want for you to sit down in a comfortable chair and ask yourself one question:
What does the cross mean?
Sit with that question for a while and when you’re ready, answer it. Your answer can be written down in words or drawn in a picture. You can say it aloud (whatever you’d like to do).
And then after you finish, ask yourself again:
What does the cross mean?
Keep repeating this as often as you can. You will remark how your answer (and your life) will change the more you do this.

Song of Reflection: Mercy Tree
"'It is finished,'" was His cry
The perfect lamb was crucified
His sacrifice, our victory
Our Savior chose the Mercy Tree
Hope went dark that violent day
The whole earth quaked at love's display
Three days silent in the ground
This body born for heaven's crown
And on that bright and glorious day
When heaven opened up the grave
He's alive and risen indeed
Praise Him for the Mercy Tree"
