Isaiah 55:8-9 states “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thought than your thoughts.” My assumption is that Joseph did not have this Scripture in mind when he learned of Mary’s pregnancy. He had intended to walk away (without publicly disgracing her). Most of us can understand his dilemma.
Just when we think we understand how everything works, we are reminded that God has His own plans. “But God my plan was to retire at this job, not be laid off at the age of 53”, “But God my plan was to go away to college and not stay at home.” Sometimes God changes things and we like Joseph have the option to submit to God’s plan and chose to be obedient to Him in whatever situation we are placed in.

- How was Joseph described in verse 19?
- Why is the son to be named Jesus? (vs. 21)
- How has God unexpectedly changed your plans?
Suggested Prayer: Pray for Christians serving in Ukraine. Pray for wisdom and guidance as they serve God in this region of the world.
A Special Christmas Memory from Mel C.
As a member of the choir I receive a special gift every Christmas Eve. At the end of the service the choir goes outside and lines the sidewalk towards the parking lot. We sing Christmas carols to our church family as they head for home. It is usually cold and you can see your breath in the air, but it seems every single person has a big smile as they go through. Many talk to us or shake hands and hug each other. You can feel and share this warmth and happiness every Christmas Eve.
