Day 27: For This Very Reason
“Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour." John 12:27 (NIV)
Recently, we were talking with our kids about the story of David & Goliath. Steve was reading about David from the Bible and our youngest kept jumping to the end.
As my older kids would say, “spoiler alert.”
Can you relate?
How often do we hear the story of Jesus and go on autopilot as we listen to his birth, death and resurrection? We already know what’s going to happen. Maybe we have heard it hundreds of times before or maybe we are distracted with other pressures to really give our full attention to his teachings.
Today, let’s stop for a moment.
Read this: “Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.” vs. 27
What does the statement “it was for this very reason I came to this hour” mean to you?
Let’s not go on autopilot right now. Let’s stop and reflect on Jesus’ intentional plan to bring light into darkness, to bring us hope.
I read this quote by Max Lucado years ago and it has always stuck with me. I think it beautifully sums up the love that Jesus has for us and why he chose the cross:
"He saw you cast into a river of life you didn't request. He saw you betrayed by those you love. He saw you with a body that gets sick and a heart that grows weak. He saw you in your own garden of gnarled trees and sleeping friends. He saw you staring into the pit of your own failures and the mouth of your own grave. He saw you in your own garden of Gethsemane and he didn't want you to be alone ... He would rather go to hell for you than to heaven without you." Thank you Jesus.
