Day 1: The Real Good News
Have you ever had some really good news? I mean “really good news?” The kind of news that is so good you’ve just got to share it? John had that kind of good news, in fact, that is the reason he wrote this gospel, he wanted to share that good news with you (John 20:30-31).
John was a fisherman, the son of Zebedee, the brother of James, but he was more than just that. John was also a follower of Jesus. In 1st John, chapter one, he tells us that he walked with Jesus, laughed with Jesus . . . and during that time with Jesus he discovered that Jesus was more than just a good man, Jesus was, and is, God become human flesh, come to walk among us (John 1:14).
John tells us that in the opening verses on his gospel, “In the beginning the Word already existed and the Word was with God because the Word was God.” Jesus existed before that Genesis 1:1 time, before that “In the beginning” creation time, in fact, Jesus was a part of that creation, “God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him.”
John wants us to understand Jesus is God, fully God and fully human and both at the same time.
Why is this good news? Because as a human, Jesus has felt what you feel. He knows what it is like to be you. He knows what it is like to watch loved ones become sick . . . and die. He knows what it feels like to be hungry or thirsty or tired. He knows what it feels like to be abandoned and betrayed. He knows what you feel because he has felt it too.
But that is not the end of the story. John discovered Jesus is not just a human, he is also God. And as God, he can do more than just feel what you feel, he can make it better. You can go to him. He understands and he can make it better.
Today we are beginning a journey through the gospel of John. As we read through this gospel remember John’s reason for writing it, it’s good news and it’s for you.
